When deciding what resource to use in order to get the most comprehensive list of currently recognised countries, I eventually chose the United States as a reference point, more specifically the Independent States of the World list provided by the US State Department.
The country list has been updated as recently as May 30, 2018 – which I decided was the most complete list of 195 recognised countries.
